Becoming a Toothpaste Expert

Posted .

The standard American toothpaste has mild abrasives and fluoride in the ingredient list. However, there’s more to toothpaste than that. Want to be a toothpaste expert? Dr. Douglas Hauck is happy to get you started so you can choose the exact toothpaste that suits your mouth best:

The first thing to keep in mind is to always look for the American Dental Associations Seal of Acceptance, on the package. This small seal signifies that the ingredients meet the ADA’s rigorous standards for safety and effectiveness. In other words, it will do what it says it’s going to do and won’t damage your health in the process.

Are you looking to brighten your teeth? You can try whitening toothpaste. Most whitening toothpastes sold in stores use a mild concentration of hydrogen peroxide to help remove surface stains. If you have medium to severe stains, you’ll want to look for something stronger.

Some types of toothpaste have been specifically formulated to decrease tooth sensitivity. Remember that while desensitizing toothpaste can provide short-term relief, you will still need professional diagnosis and care. The increased sensitivity might be a symptom of a more serious issue.

If you have a dental appliance like a retainer, mouth guard, or dentures, you might also want to use nonabrasive toothpaste. Some types of these toothpastes are also formulated specifically to help mitigate the effects of chronic dry mouth.
