Has brushing your teeth become an afterthought? Is it something that you rush through so you can get to work on time, or get to bed at a decent hour? If so, you probably aren’t along. After all, mornings can hectic, and by the time you’re ready for bed, you are most likely exhausted.
But as rushed or as tired as you may be, you need to spend the right amount of time, and use the right technique to scrub your teeth. Our dentist, Dr. Douglas Hauck, has some pointers. Proper brushing means taking two minutes, twice a day to brush. You can spend one minute on your upper teeth, and one minute on your lower teeth. You also need to floss at least once a day. It doesn’t matter if you brush and then floss or floss and then brush, just as long as you do a good job of both.
Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth. Clean the outsides and then the insides of your top and then your bottom teeth. To scrub your front teeth, hold your toothbrush in a vertical position and brush with short strokes, up and down. Don’t forget to clean the biting and chewing surfaces of your teeth, especially your molars and premolars, since your back teeth can trap food particles and bacteria that can cause cavities.
When it is time to floss, you need about 18 inches. Wrap the majority of the floss around each of your middle fingers. You should give yourself about two inches to start with. Working your way forward from your back teeth, curve the floss around each tooth and floss just under and then away from your gum line. Make sure that you use a fresh section of floss for each tooth, and don’t reuse floss, since that will only spread plaque and bacteria around your mouth.
Of course, you need to see our dentist every six months for a cleaning and examination. Only a cleaning from our dentist will remove the plaque that your toothbrush can’t, which can help prevent problems such as gum disease.
