The Basics on Toothpaste Ingredients

Posted .

Do you ever look at the ingredient label on your toothpaste and wonder about the roles of the paste? If so, our Hauck Cosmetic Dentistry dental team is happy to help you! There are many different ingredients in your toothpaste and we are happy to tell you more about them so you trust the product you are using. The four common toothpaste ingredients include:

Fluoride: Fluoride is a beneficial mineral that strengthens and nourishes your teeth. It penetrates the tooth enamel and gives it the ability to fight off tooth decay and enamel erosion. Because of fluoride, your smile can resist the effects of the acidic and sugary foods and beverages you consume.

Glycerol: Glycerol gives the toothpaste a consistent texture and it keeps it from drying out, making it flow smoothly out of the tube. This can be known as glycerol, glycerin, or glycerine.  When it’s not used in toothpaste, it can be used in processed foods, like yogurt and peanut butter.

Sorbitol: Sorbitol has two roles; it helps hold the toothpaste together and it also sweetens the toothpaste. Even though it acts as a sweetener, it does not promote cavities.

Calcium carbonate: Calcium carbonate is an abrasive that helps remove plaque, bacteria, debris, and surface stains from your teeth. This gives your teeth a nice smooth feeling after you’ve brushed and it also helps you prevent many dental issues, including tooth discoloration.
